| Todd Smith Head Strength Coach |
The season has ended but the student-athletes' work is only beginning for the next year. The first thing we do as a team is to post-season test. How well did we maintain our strength/speed numbers? This test session will show whether what we did the past "in-season" worked. It will also tell us what we need to change for next season.
The tests we perform are the 25 yard dash, lane agility, pro-agility, vertical jump, force plate jump testing, bench press, chin-ups, and body composition. The goal is to stay within 90% of your best mark from last offseason. Typically all the new guys continue to get stronger throughout the in-season. They are constantly with me in the weight room, because they do not log significant minutes and because most really need to get stronger. The main minute guys lift 2-3 times a week for most of the year. Come tournament time that number drops to one day/week depending on travel and playing schedule. For our main minute guys to stay above 90% is a real accomplishment. The basketball season is a long grinding time on both your mind and body.
From our test results we start setting up the program for this upcoming offseason. We also reflect back on the in-season program as to how we can make it better for next year. Each student-athlete is unique in how well he maintains or gains strength through the in-season. The numbers from post season testing give our guys quantitative data on where they are right now. From this we can start setting up goals for this offseason. Our next test time will be the beginning of summer session I. After that we will test in the middle of summer. From there we test at the end of summer. The grand finally of how hard and smart we worked the past offseason.
