Golfers Garner Back-To-Back Wins On First Day of The Match Play
Feb. 11, 2013
REUNION, Fla. - The Marquette University men's golf team opened the 2013 spring season Monday at The Match Play, securing a pair of victories over BIG EAST Conference opponents Seton Hall and DePaul.
"It's nice to see the hard work in the winter paying off today," said head coach Steve Bailey. "I was especially impressed with our back nine in the afternoon. After nine holes, we were down in nearly every match. Our guys showed some resilience and made up a bunch of ground. We look forward to carrying that momentum into our final match tomorrow."
Konieczki closed out his match with birdies on three of his last four holes. Joiner also carded three birdies in the opening round, extending his lead over DePaul's Brian Dempster with back-to-back birdies on holes nine and 10.
Marquette's second match of the day was played using medal scoring, as the Golden Eagles squeezed past DePaul 11-10. Chester was the only MU golfer to win both his matches on the day. He bested the Blue Demons' Alex Lloyd, 2-1.
Marquette also got individual victories from Nick Nelson and Zach Gaugert. Nelson won all three points over his opponent by carding a 1-over-par 73. Gaugert rallied to a 2-1 win with six birdies, including a 2-under 34 on the back nine.
The Golden Eagles wrap up competition on Tuesday with another round of medal match play when they go head-to-head with Cleveland State.
