The Marquette golf team vaulted up the standings to finish fifth place at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate to start the spring season. Marquette shot a final round 295, tying tournament winner S.C.-Aiken for the best team round of the tournament.
USC-Aiken won the event at 36-over, 900. Marquette placed fifth at 52-over, 916.
Sophomore Ted Gray was Marquette's highest finisher, placing 10th with a 10-over 226. Eastern Michigan's Korey Mahoney won the event going away, shooting one-under, 215. He won the event by six strokes.
Senior Joe Weber improved 20 spots to 45th. He finished in 25th at 232. Senior Nathan Colson rebounded from the bottom five to finish 33rd. He finished at 17-over 233.
Senior Kyle Murphy finished in 48th at 20-over, 236. Freshman Mike Van Sickle placed 54th at 23-over, 239.
The Golden Eagles return to action this weekend, taking part in the three-day Dick Wittcoff/USF Invitational, which starts Friday and runs through Sunday.
