Kretz Leads Golden Eagles In Opening Round at USF Invite

DADE CITY, Fla. -- Marquette University opened play Friday at the USF Invitational where the Golden Eagles are currently in 13th place after posting a first-round team score of 297. Action continues Saturday with the second round at Lake Jovita Country Club.
Live scoring of the 54-hole event, which will conclude Sunday, is available at Golfstat.com.
"It was a roller coaster of a day," said MU head coach Steve Bailey. "We got off to a good start, but winds picked up when we made the turn and we struggled for a stretch."
Senior Kelly Kretz, who carded a 64 in his last round of stroke play last November at the Pacific Invitational in Stockton, Calif., led Marquette with an even-par 72 Friday. Kretz moved to 3-under with a birdie on the par-5 ninth hole. But a pair of double bogeys on the back nine cost Kretz as he fell into a tie for 21st place on the individual leaderboard.
Sophomore Ryan Prickette (-1) and freshman Corey Konieczki (-2) were also under par through the turn. However, the MU underclassmen found themselves battling the same weather conditions and shot 74 and 76, respectively.
Playing in his fourth collegiate event, newcomer Michael Motz showed some poise by closing with three straight birdies to fire a 75.
"I was very proud of the way Michael finished and felt Ryan and Kelly battled back nicely after costly doubles in the middle," Bailey added.
Middle Tennessee State (274) leads the 21-team field with a six-stroke advantage over North Texas (280).
