DADE CITY, Fla. -- Senior Kelly Kretz fired a 2-under-par 70 Saturday and is tied for 12th place to lead Marquette University heading into the final round of the USF Invitational tomorrow at Lake Jovita Country Club.

MU fell to 15th place in the 21-team field after carding a second-round team score of 298 to follow up Friday's opening-round 297.

Like yesterday, Kretz moved to 3-under at the turn, this time with the help of a tap-in eagle 3 on the 534-yard hole nine in which he hit an 8-iron from 182 yards out to within six inches of the pin.

Kretz picked up a pair of bogeys on the back nine but managed a birdie on hole 17 to get back to 2-under on the day. He is currently eight strokes off the lead at 2-under 142 (72-70) for the tournament.

"I scored well today, didn't necessarily hit the ball very well," said Kretz. "The birdie (on 17) was nice, because I got back one of the shots I lost on the back."

Freshman Corey Konieczki also closed out the front nine with an eagle and went on to finish the day at even-par, including three birdies.

"I hit a hybrid into the middle of the green on nine and had a long, 40-foot downhill putt," said Konieczki. "The green looked like it was breaking away from the water and trusted my judgment and made the putt. Mentally, I was able to pick myself up after being 3-over through eight.

"I hit the ball much better than I did yesterday, but still not that great. My short game and putting is very good right now, so whenever I missed a green I was usually able to make up-and-down for par."

A chance of afternoon thunderstorms are in the forecast for Sunday's third round. Live scoring is available at
