Haase Paces Golden Eagles at USF Invite

DADE CITY, Fla. -- While not all of the golfers competing Friday at the USF Ron Smith Invitational were able to finish their opening rounds due to darkness, Marquette University wrapped up play with a 297 at the par-72 Lake Jovita Golf Club.
Matt Haase, who fired a tournament record 8-under-par 64 at the 2009 BIG EAST Conference Championship his last time playing the course, shot a 1-under 71 Monday to lead the Golden Eagles. He is currently tied for 11th place on the individual leaderboard.
Haase holed out for eagle from 84 yards on the 362-yard hole 17, his eigth hole of the round after starting on the back nine. It helped bolster a scorecard that also featured a pair of birdies.
Ben Sieg eagled the par-5 hole two, but struggled down the stretch to settle with a 78. Meanwhile, Kelly Kretz sits two strokes behind Haase heading into round two Saturday. Kretz is tied for 33rd place. Mike McDonald and Ryan Prickette shot 75 and 80, respectively to round out the MU lineup.
Marquette is tied with Nebraska for 19th place in the team standings. The Golden Eagles will have some work to do before Sunday's final round. North Florida, which carded a score of 2-under 286, owns a two-stroke advantage over Middle Tennessee State, Florida Southern and Campbell all tied for second place at even-par 288.
Prickette will tee off the Golden Eagles' second round of action Saturday at 11:15 a.m. Central Time. Live scoring is available for the duration of the tournament.
