SCOTTSDALE, Arizona - Marquette junior Zach Gaugert parlayed his strong start into a season-best tournament score of 219 (T-12, 3-over-par) with a final round 73, and the Golden Eagles moved up a spot on the final day to finish seventh at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of Michigan.

Gaugert, who entered as an individual, carded his best score since shooting 216 at the Mission End Spring Spectacular as a freshman in March of 2013, and his 12th-place finish is his best career mark in a 54-hole intercollegiate event. He began the day tied for 10th after a second-round 72 on Friday.

"Great showing from Zach this week," coach Steve Bailey said. "He has put in a lot of hard work this season and it's nice to see it pay off."

Gaugert's score (74-72-73--219) led all individuals competing at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate and his 13 birdies in the tournament were tied for third-best.

As a group, Marquette moved up one spot from its 36-hole eighth-place rank, posting the day's fifth-lowest team score at 292 (4-over-par). The Golden Eagles went 302-313-292--906 in the 54-hole weekend.

Junior Nick Nelson posted the best tournament score among the five Marquette team players, finishing 1-under-par on the back nine to end his third round at even par. Nelson went 72-77-72-221 to complete the tournament in a tie for 15th place at 6-over-par.

"Solid performance by Nick as well," Bailey said. "Nick has always been known for his consistency in ball striking and this week he really had it going on the greens."

Senior Brandon Cloete had the top day for the Golden Eagles, finishing with a round of 70 on the strength of five birdies and a score of 3-under-par on the back nine. Classmate CJ Swift had the shot of the day for Marquette with an eagle on the 16th hole - Swift finished his final round at 1-under-par.

"Good closing rounds by our seniors," Bailey added. "It was promising to see our upperclassmen bounce back and finish with sub-par rounds."

The Golden Eagles will continue spring break practice in Arizona this week (March 8-14). Marquette's next tournament entry is the El Macero Classic, hosted by UC Davis, April 10-12.
