March 7, 2010
DADE CITY, Fla. – Marquette University closed with a third round score of 301 to complete its opening weekend of spring competition Sunday at the USF Ron Smith Invitational held at the par-72 Lake Jovita Golf Club.
While Sunday’s closing round wasn’t the Golden Eagles’ best performance of the weekend, it also wasn’t their worst. MU wrapped up the three-round tournament at 901 (297-303-301) and finished tied for 19th place along with Columbus State.
Mike McDonald, who rattled off three straight birdies on his final three holes, closed with a career-low round of three-under 69 and was the lone Marquette player to go under par in the team’s final round of action. He finished the tournament tied for 23rd on the individual leaderboard with a score of 217 (75-73-69).
Florida Southern College was five strokes better than Middle Tennessee State to claim the team title with a score of 852 (288-281-283). Florida Southern also boasted the individual medalist, Matt Stauch, who fired a 12-under 204 (68-65-71).
