SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — Marquette claimed a 4-and-1 opening round win over Menlo (Calif.) College before rain halted semifinal play on Monday between the Golden Eagles and Cal Poly at the MacKenzie Matchplay, hosted by San Francisco at Pasatiempo G.C.
Marquette, which is the top-seeded team in the MacKenzie Matchplay thanks to its No. 38 (Golfstat) national ranking, got convincing quarterfinal wins from Hunter Eichhorn (seven strokes) and Oliver Farrell (five strokes). Matthew Bachmann rallied from an all square match thru 16 holes with a par on No. 17 and a birdie on No. 18 to close out MU’s victory over NAIA-member Menlo.
The Golden Eagles led Cal Poly 3-and-2 before the weather stopped play. Eichhorn completed his second match win of the day by four strokes. Bachmann and Austin Kendziorski were leading their matches.
Play will resume, weather permitting, on Tuesday.
