PINEHURST, N.C. -- Marquette University senior Mike Van Sickle held his ground Monday while the Golden Eagles are tied for 11th place following the second round of the Pinehurst Intercollegiate By Gatorade. Van Sickle, who is tied for second heading into Tuesday's final round at The Centennial No. 8 Course, seeks his fifth victory of the season.
Marquette's NCAA Division I player-of-the-year candidate owned a share of the lead late in the day, but slipped to two back after Nathan Sutherland of Miami University shot an even par to finish round two at 4-under 140 for the tournament. Van Sickle sits at 3-under 141 (70-71).
Van Sickle birdied three of his first six holes, including back-to-back birdies on hole five and hole six. He bogeyed eight and stayed at 2-under under until another bogey on hole 14 put him at 1-under on the day where he would finish with a 71.
Fellow senior Dustin Schwab was even through 12 holes, but he moved to 1-over with a bogey on the par-3 hole 13. Schwab finished the day at 3-over 75, matching teammate Ben Sieg, after a hiccup on 18 in which he carded double-bogey.
Red-shirt freshman Matt Haase and sophomore Kelly Kretz each shot a 77 on Monday. Haase is 7-over 151 (74-77) for the tournament and tied for 48th place. Kretz is tied with Sieg at 9-over 153.
Marquette is tied with Radford in the tournament's team standings with a team score of 596 after the Golden Eagles matched Sunday's opening-round score by carding a 10-over 298.
Michigan State moved into the sole possession of the lead with a team low-round 285 Monday and is now at 4-over 580 for the tournament, three strokes ahead of Virginia Tech and Penn State.
Tuesday's final round will be a shotgun start scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. CT. Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com.
