March 20, 2012
BANDON, Ore -- Marquette freshman Adam Chester shot a 1-over-par 72 to lead the Golden Eagles men's golf team in the final round of the Bandon Dunes Championship earlier this week, while sophomore Michael Motz tied for 15th overall.
Chester shaved 10 strokes off his second-round score on the Trails course to post his best collegiate score in a stroke-play event after getting off to a good start with birdie on his first hole of the day Monday -- the daunting 530-yard, par 5 hole 16.
Motz and senior Ryan Prickette both closed with a 75. Motz managed just one birdie on the day, but was still MU's top individual with a three-day score of 220, followed by Prickette (223), who tied for 30th overall.
Will Joiner tied for 55th with Chester with a three-day total of 230, highlighted by a second-round 73. Matt Haase (233) rounded out the field, while Corey Konieczki and CJ Swift (243) played unattached as an individuals.
"We are making some progress," said MU head coach Steve Bailey. "Motz is proving when his game is on, he can compete with the best in the country. It's also nice to see Will and Adam post good rounds. We are getting better. We just need our guys to be a little more consistent, eliminate big numbers and play well together in the same round."
Marquette tied with UM-Kansas City for 10th place among 15 teams with a score of 897. Washington and Long Beach State (857) took home the team title. Long Beach State's Kevin Lim set a new competitve course record Monday, closing with a 5-under 66.
Marquette will return to action March 25-27 at the C&F Bank Intercollegiate, hosted by The College of William & Mary, at Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg, Va.
