PRINCEVILLE, Hawaii - The Marquette golf team picked up its first victory of the season, winning the 54-hole Kauai Collegiate Cup. The Golden Eagles shot a three round 878 (14-over par) and were led by freshman Kyle Murphy and Joe Weber.
"Overall, it was a real team effort," said head coach Tim Grogan. "We didn't rely on our tip two guys like we usually do. Two key guys that played well were freshman - Joe Weber and Kyle Murphy. It's encouraging to see freshmen do that. The guys put in good efforts the last few weeks and it paid off."
The Golden Eagles won over host Western Kentucky by five strokes. The Hilltoppers finished at 883. Eastern Michigan placed third at 887.
Murphy and Weber both finished in a tie for fifth place. They shot a two-over, 218. They finished six strokes off the individual lead. Western Kentucky's Jared Topmiller claimed the individual medalist honors with a four-under, 212.
Senior Matt Hilton finished just out of the top 10. He shot a seven-over, 219 to place 11th. Sophomore Nathan Colson, Marquette's leading scorer, shot a 12-over, 228 to finish 21st. Freshman Steve Sass rounded out the Marquette roster placing 28th with a 16-over, 232.
The Golden Eagles return to action on March 28-29 with the Bradford Creek Intercollegiate in Greenville, N.C.
