MILWAUKEE – Marquette University junior Kelly Kretz fired a three-under-par 68 Friday and was tied for third place on the individual leaderboard following the first round of action at the FAU Spring Break Championship.

Kretz’s five birdies Friday at Gleneagles Country Club helped pace a Golden Eagles team that is tied for 10th place overall heading into Saturday’s second round.

Kretz got off to a strong start by opening up with back-to-back birdies. He is tied with Murray State’s Nick Newcomb, who is also just one stroke behind Chris DeForest of Illinois and four strokes behind individual leader Doug Fortner of Notre Dame who carded Friday’s individual low round of 7-under 64.

Marquette carded a team score of 298 to put the Golden Eagles in a four-way tie along with St. Mary’s (Calif.), Murray State and fellow BIG EAST Conference member USF.
