Marquette Finishes Tied For 8th at FAU Spring Break Championship
March 27, 2011
DELRAY BEACH, Fla. -- Marquette University finished in a tie for eighth place at the FAU Spring Break Championship, led by senior Kelly Kretz who closed with a 1-under par 71 in the final round Sunday at Gleneagles Country Club.
Kretz recorded a 54-hole score of 218 (73-73-71), which matches the fifth lowest individual score of MU's 2010-11 campaign. Kretz carded five birdies Sunday, and 11 birdies for the tournament, to pace the Golden Eagles.
It was the fifth time in the last five events that Kretz has posted a top-25 finish.
Right behind Kretz was MU freshman Michael Motz (T36) who posted a weekend score of 222 (73-75-74), one stroke off his 54-hole collegiate low. Motz tied for 36th place, his best individual finish as a Golden Eagle.
MU (894), which posted a third-round team score of 292 -- its best round of the tournament by four strokes -- finished tied with Michigan State and Marshall in the final team standings, ahead of Big 10 Conference schools Northwestern and Wisconsin and ahead of BIG EAST rival Connecticut, among others in the 17-team field.
Next up for head coach Steve Bailey and the Golden Eagles is the Hoosier Invitational hosted by Indiana University, April 8-10, in Bloomington, Ind.
