WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Freshman Adam Chester led the Marquette University men's golf team with a top-20 individual finish Tuesday at the C&F Bank Intercollegiate at Kingsmill Resort.
Chester shot a 4-over-par 75 to finish tied for 20th place at 221 after opening with back-to-back rounds of 73. It was just the fourth collegiate event for the Morecambe, England, native.
"I'm happy for Adam and the progress he's making," said MU head coach Steve Bailey. "We see on a daily basis how talented he is, once he tightens up his misses and converts on more birdie opportunities, he will make his way up the leaderboard."
Marquette's low round of the tournament went to sophomore Corey Konieczki, who closed with a 72 Tuesday following four birdies, including two birdies on his back nine, to finish at 228 (78-78-72).
"I'm proud of the way Corey battled today," said Bailey. He only hit eight greens and managed to shoot 1-over. We talked last night about playing with toughness and persevering through tough stretches. Corey epitomized that today."
Marquette placed 21st out of 29 teams with a team score of 911 after a second-round 310 saw the Golden Eagles drop four spots from Sunday's opening round of play in which MU shot team weekend-best score of 298.
"Overall, a combination of our ball striking and short game hurt us this week," said Bailey. "We only hit 51 percent of our greens and converted on 44 percent of our up-and-down opportunities. For us to compete, we must improve in both of those areas."
Missouri (870) boasted three of the top five golfers to edge UNC Greensboro and Old Dominion by two strokes each to claim the team title.
Marquette's next event will be a match at Florida Atlantic on April 14, in Boca Raton, Fla.
