Schwab Shoots 67 In Opening Round

March 27, 2009

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. -- While his teammates struggled to tame the par-71 Championships Course at Gleneagles Country Club, senior Dustin Schwab fired a 4-under-par 67 to lead the Marquette University men's golf team Friday in the opening round of the Spring Break Championship, hosted by Florida Atlantic University.

Schwab rattled off three straight birdies beginning with the 366-yard, par-4 hole four. His lone blemish happened when he bogeyed hole 14, but two more birdies on the back nine put Schwab three strokes behind the leader, Cam Burke of Eastern Michigan, who shot a 64.

Schwab's 67 was his lowest round since he shot a collegiate-low 65 in the second round of the 2007 Xavier Invitational and was the third lowest round by an MU golfer this year.

As a group, the Golden Eagles finished at 14-over 298 and sit in 11th place heading into Saturday's second round of action. Illinois paced the 14-team field following day one with a 7-under 277, followed by Ohio State (280) and Eastern Michigan (283).

Senior Mike Van Sickle settled for an 80. He was 9-over on the front nine and went to 11-over with a double-bogey on the par-4 hole 11. He finished the back nine even after carding birdies on hole 12 and hole 17.

Sophomore Ben Sieg was also even on the back and finished at 4-over 75 after getting a triple bogey on the opening hole.

Van Sickle owns MU's first tee time Saturday when he tees off on hole 10 at approximately 11:42 a.m. CT. Live scoring is available for this event.
