Marquette Golfers in Sixth Place After Day One

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – The Marquette University men’s golf team sits in sixth place overall following the first two rounds Saturday at the Irish Creek Collegiate and is within striking distance of a top-five finish heading into Sunday’s final round.
Sophomore Matt Haase collected a pair of eagles during his first round of play to finish at two-under-par 69, which was matched by Kelly Kretz in round two after Kretz fired an opening-round one-over-par 72.
Kretz is tied for 10th place on the individual leaderboard followed by senior Mike McDonald (T-16th) who posted back-to-back rounds of 73 and 70. Haase slipped into a tie for 33rd place after a second-round 78.
With a team score of 576 (287-289), the Golden Eagles are currently four strokes behind fifth-place Mercer (572) and six strokes back of Kennesaw State. Charlotte leads the team standings after day one with a score of 562.
Belmont Abbey’s Joe Campbell (67-67) is the top individual at six-under 136 for the tournament.
