MILWAUKEE - With a four-under par 138 after 36-holes, Marquette University freshman Kelly Kretz earned the highest finish of his young career Saturday at the rain-shortened Marshall Invitational in Huntington, W.Va. Kretz carded 68 and 70 in back-to-back rounds at the par-71 Guyan Golf Course to place in a three-way tie for second, just two strokes behind the individual medalist. Marquette finished fourth overall with a team score of 575. Kretz put together his best consecutive rounds since last fall at the Pacific Invitational when he matched a career-low with a 67 followed by a 71. Kretz went on to shoot a 68 in the final round to roll to a seventh-place finish, his previous career-best. Penn State's Robert Rohanna took home medalist honors Saturday with a 136 (70-66), while Kretz tied with Illinois teammates Scott Langley and Mark Ogren, who shot back-to-back rounds of 69. Junior Mike Van Sickle was just two strokes behind Kretz. Van Sickle posted an even-par 71 in the first round followed up by a 69 for a 140, tying him for fifth place. Van Sickle set the school's single-season record for rounds of par-or-better (22) in the process. Seniors Ted Gray and Michael Bielawski fired a 73 and 76, respectively, then flip-flopped scores in round two to each card a 149. Dustin Schwab rounded out the Golden Eagles' scoring with a 153 (78-75). Marquette finished three strokes ahead of Rhode Island (578). Illinois claimed the team championship with a tournament-record 554 (274-280). Penn State finished runner-up by tying the former record at 561 (281-280).
