The Marquette golf team shot rounds of 293 and 297 in the first day of the Marshall Invitational in Huntington, W.Va. The Golden Eagles carded a 590 and are 11 strokes behind tournament leader Eastern Michigan.

The 293 that Marquette shot in the first round gave the Golden Eagles the lead following the first 18 holes. MU held a one-shot advantage over Eastern Michigan, Richmond and Rhode Island. Several teams saw their afternoon round scores go down while MU's rose four shots. Eastern Michigan shot a tourney best 285 in the second round to take a four stroke lead.

Senior Kyle Murphy is in striking distance in the individual portion of the tournament. He carded a 71 in the first round and a 73 in the second to finish at 144, three shots behind Eastern Michigan's Chris Ross, who is the leader at 141.

Freshman Mike Van Sickle is Marquette's second finisher in 28th place at 149. Seniors Nathan Colson and Joe Weber are in 35th place at 150. Sophomore Ted Gray rounds out the MU participants at 151 in 47th place.

The final round begins Saturday, April 8 at 8:30 a.m. EDT.
