EL MACERO, California - Senior Brandon Cloete shot an opening round 69 (3-under-par) to lead four Marquette players at par or better, as the Golden Eagles finished Day 1 of the El Macero Classic in a first place tie with host UC Davis.
Marquette's Friday score of 281 (7-under-par) is the team's best round of the 2014-15 season - it was the first competitive round for the Golden Eagles since the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate on March 7.
"Having four guys at par or better with 20 birdies is a nice way to start," coach Steve Bailey said. "We gained a lot of momentum early, getting to 10-under through six holes. There were a bunch of bogeys on holes 7 though 12, but I'm proud of the way our guys responded, finishing the last five at 6-under."
Cloete carded his first sub-70 round of the season, finishing in a tie for second place and two strokes behind leader Luke Vivolo of UC Davis. His day began with four birdies on the first five holes to go out at 3-under - Cloete played par golf on the back nine to remain near the top of the leaderboard.
Freshman Trevor Thomas matched Cloete's hot start with four birdies on the first six, and finished the day at 70 (2-under-par) and tied for fourth place. Thomas tied his collegiate low round with Friday's performance.
Junior Nick Nelson was 2-under on the front nine and wrapped up at 70 - he and Thomas are tied with two other players for fourth. Pat Sanchez opened with an even par round, in contention after finishing tied for 12th.
Second round play begins at 12:30 p.m. CT on Saturday - visit Golfstat for pairings and live scoring.
