EL MACERO, California -- Junior Pat Sanchez posted Sunday's low round with a 1-under-par 71 to finish the weekend tied for eighth (72-76-71--219) and Marquette closed out the El Macero Classic tied for second place (281-296-298--875).

In the 54-hole El Macero Classic, the Golden Eagles never finished a round lower than second place, and tied for the low team round at 281 on Friday. Host UC Davis was the winner with a 1-over-par 865; Sacramento State finished in a tie for second with MU at 875.

"Today was a great test playing in the final group under challenging conditions," coach Steve Bailey said. "We made a good run and got within two shots of the lead on the back nine after back-to-back birdies by Sanchez and [Brandon] Cloete. Unfortunately, we didn't capitalize on par-5s on the back nine and made a few big numbers on par-3s."

On a day where the average score was just over 77, Sanchez was the only player in the field to finish the third round under par. After going out at even par, he birdied the 10th and 11th to drop to 2-under for the day - Sanchez bogeyed on the 13th and 16th, but his birdie on the par-4 14th was enough to secure the low round of the day.

Sanchez was one of four Marquette players to finish at par or better on Friday - he wrapped up at 4-over on Saturday and finished the weekend at 3-over-par. For the tournament, Sanchez's 37 par makes were tied for third-best.

Freshman Trevor Thomas posted the second-best tournament for Marquette (70-73-78--221) and finished one stroke off his collegiate best 54-hole score.

All five Marquette starters finished in the event's top-20 - senior Brandon Cloete's 3-under-par 69 on Friday was the best round of the weekend for the Golden Eagles. MU players had five rounds at par or better, led by a pair of sub-par rounds by junior Nick Nelson (70-71-81--222) - Nelson played with the final pairing on Sunday.

"Overall it was a decent finish and a good sign to have five guys finish in the top-20," Bailey said. "There are plenty of positives heading to Iowa."

Marquette's final outing before the 2015 BIG EAST Championships is the Hawkeye Invitational, hosted by the University of Iowa, April 18-19.
