IOWA CITY, Iowa — Sophomores Matt Murlick and Matthew Bachmann carded 1-under-par 71s to tie for 12th place, leading Marquette in its 5-over-par 293 start, good for seventh place, at the Hawkeye Invitational hosted by Iowa at Finkbine G.C.
Bachmann (6 birdies) and Murlick (5) combined for 11 birdie makes in opening round play on the Par 72, 7,239-yard course. Both played their best on the back nine - Bachmann carded five birdies to come in at 3-under-par after shooting 2-over on the front nine, while Murlick made three birdies to come in at 1-under following an even par front nine.
They sit five shots behind leader Jeremy Gandon (6-under-par, 66) of Kansas State. Iowa State posted a tournament-low 280 (8-under-par) in the first round to sit atop the leaderboard.
Round two tees off at 9 a.m. CT on Saturday. Marquette opens a 36-hole day playing in a threesome with Arkansas State and Nebraska.
