IOWA CITY, Iowa — A 2-over-par 74 from Matt Murlick allowed him to make a seven spot jump on the leaderboard to fifth place (71-74–145, 1-over-par), as Marquette (293-314—607) finished ninth in the weather-shortened Hawkeye Invitational, hosted by Iowa at Finkbine G.C.
The tournament was reduced from 54 to 36 holes as conditions turned raw on Saturday - temperatures sat in the 30s and winds exceeded 20 miles per hour while rain fell on the Par 72, 7,239-yard course. The average score was 78.88, up from 74.67 in Friday’s opening round. No team shot lower than 11-over-par in the final round - Iowa State (7-over-par, 583) won the tournament with a 15-over-par day.
Murlick turned in one of the day’s best rounds in the 75-man field, despite the weather. Teeing off on No. 8, he shot 2-over-par on the back nine and bogeyed the Par 5 No. 2, before making a pair of birdies on his final five holes to get to even par on the front nine.
Murlick finished the 36-hole tournament with nine birdies, second-most in the field.
Medalist Jeremy Gandon (8-under-par, 136) of Kansas State was the only player in the field to shoot under par on Saturday at 2-under.
Marquette is off until the BIG EAST Championship, April 29-May 1, at Callawassie Island G.C. in Okatie, South Carolina. The Golden Eagles seek their second straight title and third in the last four years, along with the automatic berth in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships.
