Marquette Fifth Through 18 at El Macero Classic

EL MACERO, California
- On a Friday marked by windy conditions and high scores, Marquette came home in fifth place through 18 holes with an opening round score of 307 at the El Macero Classic, hosted by UC Davis at El Macero Country Club.

Zach Gaugert’s first round 75 (3-over-par) led Marquette and tied for 14th place on a day where the average individual score was 78.68 on the par 72, 6,900-yard layout.  Players dealt with wind gusts of more than 30 miles per hour throughout the day.  No hole on the course had an average score below par.

Texas Tech shot an opening round 291 to lead the 15-team field, 12 shots better than second-place Oregon State (303).  The Golden Eagles are just four shots behind OSU entering Saturday.

MARQUETTE NOTES

  • Four of MU’s five starters are in the top 32 of the 90-player field heading into Saturday’s second round.
  • On a day with tough scoring conditions, only Charlie Maleki (T-32, 78) and Pat Sanchez (Ind. T-25, 77) managed to shoot even par on the front nine for the Golden Eagles.  Nick Nelson (T-53, 80) had an even par back nine to finish his day positively.

Marquette’s five man lineup begins second round play at 12:45 p.m. CT off No. 1 with host UC Davis and Sacramento State.  The course will play par 72, 6,805 yards on Saturday.
