Farrell Finishes 3rd, MU T-5 at Hawkeye Invitational

April 16, 2017

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Oliver Farrell made a 10 spot jump with a final round 66 (6-under-par) en route to a third place finish and leading Marquette (289-295-290—874) to a tie for fifth place at the conclusion of the Hawkeye Invitational, hosted by Iowa at Finkbine G.C.

Farrell (70-74-66—210) matched his season-low round of 66 in the finale, matching the first round 66 he posted in the three-team, 36-hole Charleston Challenge in February.  For Farrell, it was his best collegiate 54-hole event finish (3rd), his season-low 54-hole score, and Sunday’s final round 66 was the best of his career in a 54-hole event.  Farrell was two strokes off his 54-hole career low of 208, set at the Price’s Give ‘Em Five Invitational in October of 2015.

His 6-under-par final round was best in the field on a day when the average player score was 74.19.

In making the move, Farrell teed off on No. 7 in the final round shotgun start and went bogey-free for the first 16 holes, moving to 5-under-par for the round with five birdies.  He made bogey on the par-4 No. 5, his 17th hole in the final round, but finished the day with his eighth eagle of the season on the par-5 No. 6.  Farrell entered the weekend 10th in the nation with seven eagle makes.

As a team, Marquette jumped two spots in the final round with a 2-over-par 290, the fourth-lowest final round score in the field.  No MU player other than Farrell finished under par in the final round, but steady play throughout the card helped the good finish - on the back nine at Finkbine, MU combined for 32 par makes and six birdies as a team.

Texas Tech, which entered the week ranked in the top 15 in all power rankings and 12th in the Bushnell/Golfweek Poll, won the event (285-284-286—855).  Iowa State’s Nick Voke (68-67-72—207) finished three strokes ahead of Farrell to take medalist honors.

The Golden Eagles led the 14-team field with 178 pars over three rounds - Charlie Maleki’s 41 par makes on 54 holes were tied for most in the 82-player field.
