Marquette Opens Play at BIG EAST Men's Golf Championship

PALM HARBOR, Fla. -- Senior Ben Sieg carded even-par 71 to lead the Marquette University men's golf team following the first round Sunday at the BIG EAST Men's Golf Championship at Innisbrook Golf Club.

MU shot 304 in the opening round and is in eighth place with two rounds remaining at the Copperhead Course. Notre Dame and Louisville (293) lead the 12-team field.

Sieg sits in fifth place on the individual leaderboard, two strokes off the lead. His lone blemish was a bogey on the sixth hole, but he was able to get back to even with a birdie on the par-4 hole 16.

Senior Kelly Kretz was 2-under through five before going on to bogey seven of the next nine holes to end up at 76 on the day, followed by freshman Michael Motz (78).

Freshman Corey Konieczki made four birdies, but was unable to recover after a double bogey on hole nine saw him go to 7-over-par at the turn. He would finish with a 79, tied with teammate Matt Haase.
