IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Pat Sanchez continued his recent run of good play by finishing 2-under-par through 36 holes and leading Marquette to a seventh-place spot through two rounds of the Hawkeye-GRE Invitational on Saturday.
Sanchez has strung together three straight rounds at par or less since his final round 71 at the El Macero Classic last Sunday. In Saturday's opening 18 holes, he posted par-5 eagles on the sixth and 15th holes, sprinkled in with a birdie on the 17th to finish with a 2-under-par 70. For the second set of 18, he played steady golf to finish at 72 and in a tie for 14th place.
Sanchez entered the weekend as Marquette's top scorer at 73.79 strokes per round.
As a team, the Golden Eagles (295-288) finished the first round in 8th place before moving up a spot following the second. MU's second round score of 288 was fifth among the 12 competing schools in the second 18 holes. Iowa State's 563 (284-279) leads the field.
Nick Nelson and Trevor Thomas both sit at 2-over-par and in a tie for 27th place entering the final round - Thomas joined Sanchez with the best Marquette round of the day, shooting a 2-under 70 in the second round.
