McDonald, Kretz Aim For Top-10 Finishes at BIG EAST Championship
April 19, 2010
PALM HARBOR, Fla. - Senior Mike McDonald and junior Kelly Kretz combined for nine birdies Monday to lead Marquette University at the BIG EAST Men's Golf Championship. Both players carded a second round 1-under-par 70 at Innisbrook's Copperhead Course to help the Golden Eagles move up a spot in the team standings with one round left to play.
MU shot 288 Tuesday, shaving 18 strokes off of its opening round score, and now sits in 10th place overall. Only two other teams - Villanova (287) and tournament leader Georgetown (286) - had lower second-round marks.
McDonald, who is currently tied for sixth place with a two-day total of 3-over 145 (75-70), got off to a torrid start by recording three straight birdies to jump to 3-under through the first four holes. He picked up his fourth birdie of the day on hole 10 and went on to a bogey-free back nine.
Kretz also managed to get to 3-under, but a double bogey on the 575-yard, par-5 hole 11 was his only major setback on an otherwise solid round. He is tied for ninth place on the individual leaderboard at 4-over 146 (76-70).
Rookie Ryan Prickette pitched in with a 1-over-par 72 Tuesday, matching his previous collegiate low-round.
At 594 for the tournament, the Golden Eagles trail four teams by three strokes or less, including the sixth-place Wildcats (591), heading into Tuesday's final round of play. Sophomore Matt Haase has MU's first tee time and will tee off on hole 10 at 7 a.m. Central Time.
