April 30, 2013
REUNION, Fla. - The Marquette University men's golf team concluded the 2012-13 campaign Tuesday, moving up one spot to finish seventh overall at the BIG EAST Men's Golf Championship, closing with a third-round 294 at the Tom Watson Course at Reunion Resort.
South Florida took home the team title and earned the league's automatic bid the NCAA regionals with a combined score of 6-under-par 858, edging runner-up St. John's (862) by two strokes. MU, which shot a team low-round 292 and was in third place following Sunday's first round, ended up at 891, three shots better than Villanova.
Junior Corey Konieczki and Pat Sanchez both carded even-par 72 to lead the Golden Eagles in the final of the three-day event and finished tied for 22nd and tied for 25th, respectively, on the individual leaderboard.
It was the best finish at the league championship for Konieczki, who was playing in the tournament for the third time of his collegiate career, and lowest 54-hole total of the season (221) for the Rockford, Ill., native.
Starting on the 10th hole, Konieczki circled his fourth birdie of the afternoon with a three on the par-4 hole No. 5 and was even through his last four.
Sanchez rebounded from a second-round 78 on Monday to shoot even-par for the second time in three days, highlighted by four birdies at the front nine that saw the Marquette freshman move to as low as 3-under at the turn.
Freshman Zach Gaugert, along with Sanchez, also tied for 25th overall, with a three-round total of 222.
