Van Sickle Sits in 43rd Through 18 Holes at NCAA Central Regionals

SUGAR GROVE, Ill. - Marquette sophomore Mike Van Sickle shot a first round 78 to sit in a tie for 43rd place at the NCAA Central Regionals in Sugar Grove, Ill. Starting in the second to last time spot, Van Sickle finished with a six-over 78. He tied with seven other golfers for that spot. Van Sickle started on the back nine and struggled out of the gate recording a bogey on two of the first three holes. He carded a double bogey on his fifth hole, but rebounded with a birdie two holes later on a long par five. He finished out his first nine holes with another bogey. Pars on the first three holes of his back nine were followed by bogeys on three of the next four holes. A bogey on the par-4 eighth hole, his 17th hole, was followed by a par. Van Sickle, MU's first entrant in the NCAA post-season, is competing for a spot at the NCAA Championships. He needs to be one of the top two individuals among the group of non-qualifying teams to advance. The top 10 teams in the 27-team field advance to the NCAA Championships. Currently, Van Sickle is in a tie for 20th among competitors whose teams are not in the top 10 Fellow BIG EAST member Louisville leads the event with a six-over, 294. Texas, Wisconsin, Tulsa, Oklahoma State, Alabama, Baylor, Lamar, Western Illinois and Kansas sit in the top 10 team spots. Louisville's Derek Fathauer leads the event at two-under, 70. Second round play is scheduled to start at 7 a.m. on Friday, May 18 with final round play taking place on Saturday, May 19.
