SAMMAMISH, Wash. -- Freshman Matt Murlick shot an even par 71 to jump 14 spots in the final round and finish tied for 29th (73-77-71—221), while Marquette closed NCAA Sammamish Region play in 13th place (291-308-300—899) on Wednesday at Aldarra G.C.
After playing at 8-over-par for the first two rounds on the par 71, 6,885-yard course, Murlick birdied twice to go out at 1-under-par before making three bogeys and two birdies on the final nine holes coming in. He made just three birdies in the first two rounds before posting five on Wednesday.
Championship No. 1 overall seed USC won the regional at 3-under-par for the event (280-283-286–849) - the Trojans advanced along with Kent State, Florida State, Alabama and Penn State to the NCAA Championships at Rich Harvest Farms G.C. May 26-31. Penn State’s Cole Miller was the medalist at 7-under-par (69-69-68—206) and seventh-place Chandler Phillips of Texas A&M advanced as an individual to the NCAA Championships.
For 2017 BIG EAST champion Marquette, this was the third NCAA regional appearance in program history.
