MU Takes Seventh in Season Opening Tournament
Sept. 7, 2014
SUGAR GROVE, Illinois - The Marquette men's golf team wrapped up their first tournament of the 2014-15 campaign with a seventh place finish at the Northern Intercollegiate. Junior Nick Nelson led all Golden Eagles and placed 10th individually among all golfers by firing a three round total of 5-over (221).
Nelson was able to battle not only tough weather conditions, which included a weather delay during round one, but also a very demanding golf course.
"It's a mindset," Nelson said. "You know you're going to make some bogeys - everyone makes bogeys - but you just have to stay patient and know your score might not be under par, but that's because you know it's going to be a challenge."
Teammate Pat Sanchez was close behind Nelson as he finished the tournament at 6-over, highlighted by a second round 69 (-3), which was one off his career low. Freshman Trevor Thomas began his collegiate career on a high note by carding a first round 74 and a three day total of 234.
A late final round charge up the leaderboard gave Virginia the tournament title with an 879, followed by Winthrop (882) and Ohio State (892) to round out the top-three. Medalist honors for the event went to Winthrop's Zach Seabolt who carded 4-under for the event (212).
After being within striking distance of the leaders after the second round, the Golden Eagles were not able to get the momentum needed to climb the leaderboard. Much of that could be blamed on the big numbers made out on the course.
"The big numbers today got us overall," said head coach Steve Bailey. "We had seven-plus double bogeys today and two triples. Those add up fast and are deflating, too."
However, Bailey is not disappointed with his team's efforts to open up the season.
"It was a really good field right out of the gates for us and a good barometer for what we need to work on when we get back," Bailey said. "It's still a lot of positives; we were able to make some birdies along the way and compete with some of the best teams in the country."
Marquette has a weekend off before traveling to Skokie, Illinois for the Windon Memorial Classic from September 21-22.
