VERONA, Wis. -- Sophomore Matt Murlick's 2-under-par 70 is tied for sixth place as Marquette sits fifth with a 1-over-par 289 in its opening round of the 2017-18 season at the Badger Invitational hosted by Wisconsin at University Ridge G.C.
Murlick was one of three Golden Eagles at par or lower - Oliver Farrell and Matthew Bachmann shot even par 72s in the opening round on Sunday. Murlick is four shots off the lead set by Texas A&M's Chandler Phillips, who shot an opening round 66.
FIRST ROUND HIGHLIGHTS
- Murlick rebounded from a 1-over-par start on the first four holes, keeping his card clean after a bogey on the par 4 No. 5. He birdied two of the next three holes to go out at 1-under-par and carded a birdie on par 4 14th hole to highlight a bogey-free back nine.
- After Farrell and Bachmann started at 3-over-par and 2-over-par, respectively, on the front nine, they flipped their cards on the back nine - Farrell birdied three holes and came in bogey-free while Bachmann made three birdies to come in at 2-under-par.
- Marquette's five starters shot a combined 7-over-par on the front nine, getting out to a 10th place start - they went 1-under-par as a team on the back nine with nine birdies to jump five spots up the leader board.
Round two gets under way for Marquette on Monday with the five starters teeing off on No. 10 in a threesome with Texas A&M and Kansas beginning at 10:20 a.m. CT.
