MADISON, Wis. - Marquette got par 72 second rounds from Charlie Maleki and Matt Murlick, Henry Klongland continues to hold a top-10 spot (T-9) at 1-under-par through 36 holes, and the Golden Eagles are in fourth place after shooting an even par 285 on the second day of the Badger Invitational, hosted by Wisconsin at University Ridge G.C.
For the second straight day, Marquette (289-285—580, 4-over-par) rode a solid stretch of finishing play, helping the Golden Eagles sit just six shots behind leader Iowa State (286-288—574, 2-under-par). Teeing off on No. 10, MU shot 3-under-par as a team from hole No. 15 through the conclusion of the round, using a stretch of 17 birdies to stay in contention entering Tuesday’s finale.
ROUND TWO NOTES
- Murlick and Maleki parlayed strong finishing play in round one into par rounds on Monday. Murlick, who concluded Sunday’s first round with 13 straight par makes, helped key MU’s good finish, making three of four birdies on the front nine to go out shooting 1-under-par. He came in at 1-over-par. After shooting 77 on Sunday, Maleki made five birdies, including two of his last four holes in the round, and was at even par on both nines.
- Klongland rebounded from a rocky start where he bogeyed three of the first five holes to shoot 1-under-par after No. 15 - he now sits in a three-way tie for ninth place at 1-under-par for the tournament, six shots off the pace set by Wofford’s Jeremy Grab (7-under-par).
- Oliver Farrell is at even par for the tournament and tied for 12th place - he came in at 1-under-par to finish the day with a 1-over-par 73.
- As a team, Marquette is leading the field in par-4 scoring (4.07) and second with 33 made birdies.
Final round play begins at 9:30 a.m. CT with shotgun start tee times - MU will play with Illinois State and Wisconsin in its third round pairings.
