Sieg, Haase Lead Golden Eagles on Opening Day of Cardinal Collegiate

SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. -- Senior Ben Sieg and junior Matt Haase each fired back-to-back rounds of 71 on the opening day of the Cardinal Collegiate, hosted by the University of Louisville. The Marquette duo is tied for ninth, while the Golden Eagles sit in eighth place, heading into Tuesday's final round.

MU proved to be the most consistent team in the 16-team field Monday with scores of 289 and 288. Senior Kelly Kretz shot 73 in round one, and then closed the day with an even-par 72. Freshman Corey Konieczki carded back-to-back rounds of 74 to round of the scoring.

Haase missed just six greens in regulation on the day, while Sieg played 21 straight holes of bogey-free golf, going six-under over the stretch. They sit just four strokes behind the leader.

Kretz made eagle on hole nine during first-round action. On the next hole, Kretz drove the par-4 hole 10 after hitting his first tee shot out of bounds, and went on to par the hole.

MU goes into Tuesday's final round just one stroke back of Bowling Green State (576) and two shots behind Ball state (575). Marshall sits atop the team leaderboard at 566 (282-284). Matt Stasiak of Miami University is the individual leader at 138 (72-66).
