SUGAR GROVE, Ill. -- Marquette set a school record score for a 54-hole event, finishing with a 32-under-par 832 (274-272-286), while Oliver Farrell (14-under-par) claimed co-medalist honors, as the Golden Eagles won the Northern Intercollegiate, hosted by Northern Illinois at Rich Harvest Farms (par 72, 7,253 yards).
Farrell (66-65-71--202) led MU to its second win in the last four events - it was the first team victory since winning the BIG EAST Championship in May of 2017. The co-medalist spot was Farrell’s first for a 54-hole event in 23 career starts - he shared the victory with Virginia’s Ashton Poole.
MU's record score was four strokes than the previous mark, a 28-under-par 836 set Nov. 5-7, 2007 at the Pacific Invitational in Stockton, Calif. The 32-under score versus par is the lowest in Marquette program history.
After dominating the 12-team field with a 22-stroke lead after Sunday’s opening 36 holes, the Golden Eagles shot a final round 2-under-par to hold off second place and 15th-ranked Virginia. The Cavaliers finished 19-under-par after an 11-under round on Monday.
Four Marquette starters finished under par and in the top 14. Freshman Hunter Eichhorn, making just his second career start, finished in third place at 9-under-par (71-65-71--207). On the strength of his opening-round 64 on Sunday, Austin Kendziorski came home tied for fourth at 7-under-par (64-72-73--209). Matt Murlick (moved two more spots up the board on Monday to a tie for 14th - he shot 1-under-par on Monday and finished at 2-under for the tournament (73-70-71--214).
MU hosts the 15-team Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills, site of the 117th US Open, beginning this Sunday (Oct. 1-3).
