Marquette Looking For Late Rally Tuesday

Sept. 29, 2008

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The Marquette University men's golf team was back in action Monday taking part in the Cardinal Classic hosted by the University of Louisville. After two rounds, the Golden Eagles sit in seventh place among 15 teams. Mike Van Sickle (t-5th) is five strokes behind the individual leader heading into Tuesday's final round at the Cardinal Club.

"Really we're just going out there, trying to focus, and shoot the best score we can," said Van Sickle. "Wherever we end up finishing is where we end up finishing. We have the kind of line up where anyone can shoot under par. We need to get one of those really good rounds [Tuesday]."

Van Sickle shot consecutive sub-par rounds, posting scores of 68 and 70 for a six-under 138. Monday's low-round was 65, carded by Eastern Kenucky's Trey Bowling. Marquette red shirt freshman Matt Haase, playing in his first collegiate event, is tied for 17th at two-under 142 (73-69).

"[Haase] is stepping it up and kind of filling a void we've been looking for in the fourth or fifth spots, so that was nice to see," said head coach Tim Grogan. "And obviously Mike Van Sickle played well. We're looking forward to tomorrow and making it our best round of the tournament and hopefully make up some ground."

Marquette is currently 14 strokes behind co-leaders Denver and Louisville at 15-under 561 and finished today with a score of 575 (288-287). The Golden Eagles are within 10 strokes of Indiana (568), Kansas (571) and Kansas State. In second place, Eastern Kentucky (564) also trails the Pioneers of Denver and host Cardinals.

The first group will tee off tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. CT. Marquette's Ben Sieg is in the first pairing. Mike Van Sickle will be the last MU player to tee off at 8:06 a.m.'
