RIVER HILLS, Wis. — Freshman Matt Murlick shot a final round 67 to jump seven spots on the leaderboard, finishing tied for fifth with a 54-hole 1-under-par 209, as he led the Golden Eagles to a sixth-place finish (290-285-287—862) in the Marquette Intercollegiate at Milwaukee Country Club.
Murlick dazzled on the final day of MU’s annual fall tournament, firing five birdies against just two bogeys, including two to close out his tournament. His big moment came on his second shot on the par-3 No. 17, where he poured a putt of an estimated 70 feet to make the birdie on the second-hardest hole on the course. Murlick then finished out the round with a birdie on the par-4 18th hole, which played as the third-toughest during the tournament.
“He’s been consistent throughout the year, but in a field like this to have this kind of performance only three tournaments into his college career, I’m really happy for him,” head coach Steve Bailey said.
The freshman from Winnetka, Illinois had been consistently scoring, posting the team’s second-best stroke average of the season at 73.3 entering the weekend, but hadn’t gone under par until he finished the tournament 69-67 on the par-70, 7,097 course.
Northwestern pulled away and had a 4-under-par final round to score an 836 and win the tournament by five strokes over Ole Miss. NU’s Ryan Lumsden and SMU’s Gray Townsend were 3-under-par for the event and earned co-medalist honors.
Marquette also got quality play during the event from junior Garrett Loomis, who posted a 2-over-par 212 on the way to his best career 54-hole score and his best career event finish, wrapping up tied for 16th. Loomis was fourth in the field with 40 par makes.
“He was really consistent for us this week,” Bailey said. “That’s a big stride for him, having been in and out of the lineup for us the last few years, but he really put a lot of work in the last few weeks and it’s paid off.
“Overall, it was a good field and a lot of these teams will be highly ranked at the end of the year. It was great competition for us and the best part was showcasing a place like Milwaukee Country Club. A great host, a phenomenal venue and was a really good test.”
