HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. - The Marquette golf team is in 11th place after the first two rounds of the 49er Collegiate Classic in Huntersville, N.C. The Golden Eagles improved on their 304 in the first round with a 299 in the second to finish at 603 (+27). Xavier leads the team competition with an 18-under, 558.
Scores were low on the individual side with 25 golfers finishing par or better. Marquette sophomore Steve Sass was among the group. He fired a season-best 69 in the second round to sit at two-under, 142. He is in a group of five in 15th place. Indiana's Jeff Overton, a winner at the Hoosier Classic in which Marquette played earlier this year, leads the event at 13-under, 131.
Junior Nathan Colson shot a 152 and is in 48th place. Sophomore Kyle Murphy is two shots behind Colson and is in 51st. Sophomore Joe Weber is in a three-way tie for 55th at 12-over, 156. Freshman Michael Bielawski is in 60th place at 159.
Play concludes tomorrow morning with 8:30 a.m. tee times.
