Windon Memorial Classic - Final Results (PDF)
GLENVIEW, Ill. -- Marquette's second round struggles continued on into Monday's final round of play, as the Golden Eagles finished ninth at the 15-team Windon Memorial Classic hosted by Northwestern University at the par-71 North Shore Country Club. Senior Mike Van Sickle had MU's best individual finish, tying for seventh.
Marquette finished one stroke ahead of Coastal Carolina (882) with a team score of 881 (285-301-295). The Golden Eagles, who were just two strokes behind Missouri (879) and four strokes behind Michigan (877), were tied for third place following the conclusion of the first round, but rain and steadily increasing winds proved to make for challenging conditions at an already tight and narrow course.
With a team score of nine-under 843, Illinois went on to win the event by five strokes over Indiana (848). Nobody else was even close as Tulsa (865), Kent State (867) and tournament host Northwestern (870) rounded out the top-five. The tournament was one of the most-competitive fields Marquette will play against this season as eight of the participating teams advanced the the NCAA tournament last May.
Van Sickle, who was in contention to defend his tournament title after carding a two-under par 69 in the first round, matched his second round tally by again going one-over 72. Van Sickle sank 11 birdies total, but four bogeys on the front nine Monday had the All-American at plus-three by the turn. At 213 (69-72-72), he finished eight strokes back from individual medalist Jorge Campillo of Indiana.
Matt Haase rebounded slightly from a 77 on Sunday afternoon to record a two-over 73. Haase finished tied for 32nd at seven-over 220 (70-72-72). He birdied three of his first five holes Sunday, but also carded five bogeys and was unable to keep his score under par.
Next week, Marquette returns to Loveland, Ohio, site of the Xavier Invitational, which was where the Golden Eagles won the first of a single-season school record three team titles in 2007-08. The tournament is another two-day event that will run Oct. 13-14.
