SKOKIE, Ill. — Led by 1-over-par 36-hole efforts from Hunter Eichhorn (68-73—141) and Matt Murlick (68-73–141), No. 22 Marquette sits eighth after two rounds on Sunday at the Windon Memorial Classic, hosted by Northwestern at Evanston G.C.
Play in the second round was halted by darkness, with three teams and nine individuals shy of completion, but MU (276-292—586) was able to complete all 36 holes on day one. The Golden Eagles will have early third round tee times on Monday following the conclusion of round two starting at 7:30 a.m. CT.
Eichhorn and Murlick, both tied for 14th, turned in identical scores in the first two rounds - Eichhorn made par or better on 17 of 18 holes, while Murlick birdied four first round holes as they both shot 2-under-par on the Par 70, 6,793-yard course. They went 3-over-par in the second round, and each posted an eagle on the Par 5 5th hole.
MU shot a 4-under-par 276 in the first round, highlighted by 16 birdies, and went even par on the front nine of the second round, before running into trouble on the back nine in the second round on the way a 12-over-par 292. Five of the toughest nine holes on the course, by average field score, are on the back nine.
Penn State, which was MU’s playing partner along with Northwestern on Sunday, leads the tournament at 3-under-par overall.
As a team, MU shot a field-best 13-under-par on Par 5 holes on Sunday.
