AKRON, Ohio -- Battling wind and temperatures in the lower 40s, Marquette shot a team score of 306 Tuesday to finish the Firestone Invitational tied for eighth place with Pacific University. Junior Ben Sieg carded a two-over-par 74 to pace the Golden Eagles in the final round of competition at the renowned Firestone Country Club.
"Ben's score I thought was a good score today, given the conditions out there," said head coach Tim Grogan. "The positive for us is that different guys are coming up with solid rounds. They're doing the right things, but we're not getting the results that we expect at this point."
MU tallied a two-day score of 906 (298-302-306), nine strokes behind tournament host Akron whose Zips placed seventh overall. St. Mary's (Calif.) took home the team trophy with a score of 869, one stroke better than Eastern Michigan.
"We've shown glimpses of how good we can be, it's just bad timing and we're not playing our best either," added Grogan. "It's good that we're seeing it from different guys on the team, but they've all got to do it consistently."
Red-shirt freshman Ryan Prickette, who was competing in his third-ever collegiate event, posted the Golden Eagles top individual finish. Prickette tied for 26th at nine-over 225 (75-72-78).
Lone senior Mike McDonald, who had the team's low round with a one-under 71 in second-round action Monday, came back Tuesday to close with a 77. McDonald ended up at 228 (80-71-77) for the tournament followed by junior Kelly Kretz at 229 (73-79-77).
Kretz had a near hole-in-one on the par-3, 172-yard hole 17 when his tee shot bounced out of the cup and skipped off of the green. Kretz was left with a 15-foot chip and two-putted for bogey.
Western Carolina's Ricky Stout claimed medalist honors with a one-stroke victory over Marty Jeppesen of Eastern Michigan. Stout finished at five-under 211.
Next up for the Golden Eagles is The Match Play at Pine Needles, a match-play event exclusively for BIG EAST Conference teams. The three-day event will be played at Pine Needles Golf Club in Southern Pines, N.C., Oct. 10 through Nov. 1.
"We're going to take some time off, a few days this coming weekend," said Grogan. "Afterward we'll do some match play format here at home to practice for our next event."
