EL PASO, Texas — Freshman Hunter Eichhorn shot an opening round 67, his third sub-70 round of the season, as No. 22 Marquette is tied for third place following a 3-under-par 281 on Friday at the Price’s Give ‘Em Five Invitational, hosted by UTEP.
Earlier in the day, Marquette earned its second straight GCAA Golfweek/Bushnell Coaches Poll ranking, tied with UCLA for the No. 22 spot. Texas A&M, winners of the Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills earlier this month, remained the nation’s No. 1 team.
Eichhorn started hot with four front nine birdies, jumping to second place on the leaderboard. After his only bogey of the day on the Par 3 No. 10, he birdied the Par 4 15th to get back to 4-under-par. Tied for third, he sits three strokes off the top spot occupied by Texas State’s Calvin Ross and UTEP’s Charles Corner.
Matt Murlick posted MU’s other sub par round, finishing with three birdies on the final four holes to card an opening round 70 on the Par 71, 7,267-yard course. Murlick is tied for 13th.
Host UTEP leads the tournament at 9-under-par through 18 holes, six strokes ahead of the Golden Eagles. Marquette, New Mexico St. and Oral Roberts are tied for the third spot heading into second round play on Saturday.
