EL PASO, Texas -- Marquette freshman Hunter Eichhorn used a final round 65 to pull ahead and win his first collegiate event with a 9-under-par 204 (67-72-65), taking the medalist honor at the Price's Give `Em Five Invitational, hosted by UTEP.
Eichhorn, who was making just his fifth collegiate start, breezed to the win with a clean scorecard on Sunday, shooting the low round with six birdies and no bogeys on a day when the rest of the 80-player field averaged a 74.38 score on the Par 71, 7,267-yard layout at Butterfield Trail G.C.
To earn the victory, Eichhorn successfully birdied the Par 5 18th to break the tie with UTEP's Charles Corner and move to 9-under-par. The 65 was Eichhorn's second of the season and his fourth sub-70 round overall.
His win gives MU three medalists through its first five events of the season - Oliver Farrell shared honors at the Northern Intercollegiate and Austin Kendziorski tied for the top spot at the Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills.
No. 22 Marquette went 4-under-par as a team in the final round, and 3-under-par for the tournament (281-288-280-849) to finish in second place. Host UTEP won the event with a 13-under-par 839.
Kendziorski shot a final round 67 to finish eighth (73-71-67--211), jumping eight spots up the leaderboard on the final day - it's his fourth top-10 finish in five starts this season. Kendziorski entered the weekend as the low scorer in the BIG EAST Conference.
A historic fall season comes to an end for Marquette - the Golden Eagles earned their first national poll rankings in school history, checking in at No. 22 in back-to-back GCAA Golfweek/Bushnell Coaches Polls, while finishing no worse than fifth place in any event, including a win at the Northern Intercollegiate on Sept. 25.
