SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. -- Ben Sieg, Mike McDonald and Matt Haase each claimed individual victories Friday as the Marquette University men's golf team opened The Match Play at Pine Needles with three points against Rutgers. But the Scarlet Knights won more holes overall to hand MU a first-round loss at Pine Needles Golf Club.

Sieg defeated James Arbes 1-up at the No. 2 position followed in order by McDonald, who defeated Gene Yang 2 and 1, and Haase's 3 and 1 victory over the Scarlet Knights' J.F. Sorbella.

Rutgers also earned three points on three individual victories. Ultimately, it was the margin of those wins -- including Andrew Tursky's 6 and 4 decision at the No. 6 spot -- that settled the match in favor of the Scarlet Knights.

With the loss, Marquette drops into the loser's bracket of the tournament-style event which features 11 of 12 BIG EAST Conference programs and concludes Sunday, Nov. 1.

MU, which can finish no higher than eighth place following the first-round loss, will now go head-to-head with Villanova to begin play on Saturday. as the Wildcats fell to Georgetown 4-3 to open play. The Golden Eagles will then wrap up the event with a match against Seton Hall.
