SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. -- The Marquette University men's golf team completed two matches Saturday to conclude its stay at The Match Play at Pine Needles Golf Club. MU opened by falling to Seton Hall by one point then rallied for a three-point win over Villanova.
Marquette finished the team match play event, which featured a head-to-head team tournament format, with an overall record of 1-2. The Golden Eagles tied with Rutgers on Friday, 3-3, but the Scarlet Knights advanced to the winner's bracket by winning more individual holes.
Playing in the No. 3 position, senior Mike McDonald was the lone Golden Eagles player to win all three of his individual matches in two days of competition. McDonald picked up two more victories on Saturday in convincing fashion. McDonald rolled to a 5 and 4 decision over SHU's Borja Faixat followed by a 6 and 5 rout over Bret McGaughey of Villanova.
Head coach Tim Grogan's squad picked up 4.5 points in its triumph over the Wildcats, including individual wins by Matt Haase (1-up), Ryan Prickette (4 and 3) and Sammy Bettinardi (3 and 1), while Ben Sieg earned half of a point with a draw at the No. 2 spot in the Golden Eagles' lineup. Sieg scored MU's only other win with his decision over Seton Hall's Colin Van Es, 3 and 2, earlier in the day.
MU will wrap up its fall season at the St. Mary's Invitational, Nov. 9-10, at the prestigious Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach, Calif.
