Marquette Golfers Shine on Day One in Golden State

STOCKTON, Calif. -- The Marquette University men's golf team sits in third place following the first round of the Pacific Invitational Monday at Brookside Country Club.
Corey Konieczki carded a three-under-par 69 to lead the Golden Eagles. It was the lowest round of the freshman's collegiate career, playing in his fifth tournament, and the team's last, this fall. He is tied for sixth place, four strokes off the lead, heading into the Tuesday's second round.
Marquette topped its best round of the fall by eight strokes to finish Monday with a team score of 280. Ben Sieg, Kelly Kretz and Matt Haase all went under par. Kretz and Haase each fired a one-under 70 and are tied for 11th place, while Haase shot a 71 and is tied for 19th. Freshman Michael Motz finished with a 74.
Tournament host Pacific leads the team standings by five strokes over Oregon State (277) at 272 following day one of the three-day, 54-hole event, with Marquette just eight strokes back.
