STOCKTON, Calif. -- Marquette will have some ground to make up during Tuesday's pivotal second round if the Golden Eagles hope to contend at the 2008 Stockton Sports Commission Pacific Invitational. MU is tied for 10th place following the opening round of action Monday at Brookside Country Club.

Marquette is knotted with UC Santa Barbara at eight-over-par 292, five strokes better than Texas-San Antonio (297). At the top of the team leaderboard is Fresno State which currently holds a four-stroke cushion over Rice University at five-under 279. The Golden Eagles placed third at the 2007 Pacific Invitational when they shot 275 in the first round.

Junior Mike Van Sickle led the Golden Eagles with a one-under-par 70. Van Sickle carded four consecutive birdies going into the turn and moved to four-under with another birdie on the par-three hole 12. He then ran into some trouble with back-to-back bogeys on holes 13 and 14, respectively, and took a double on the par-five hole 16 before salvaging his team-best 10th round of par or better this fall season.

Sophomore Ben Sieg was two-under through 15 holes before a triple-bogey on hole 16 and a double-bogey on hole 17 put him at three-over. Sieg finished with a 75 with another bogey on the 18th hole.

Sophomore Kelly Kretz carded three birdies on the back nine, but a double-bogey on hole 17 cost him a chance at finishing around par. Kretz matched freshman Matt Haase and senior Dustin Schwab to finish at three-over 74.

Sieg will be the first Marquette player Tuesday, beginning his second round on hole 10 at 11:10 a.m. CT. The three-round tournament will conclude with the third and final round scheduled for Wednesday. Live scoring is available for the tournament.
