WINTER GARDEN, Fla. - With two-under par, 70s, in each of the first two rounds, Marquette freshman Ben Sieg is atop the leaderboard at the BIG EAST/MAC Challenge in Winter Garden, Fla.

Sieg had eight birdies on his way to the lead two-thirds of the way through the tournament. He has a one stroke lead over St. John's Keegan Bradley, who is at three-under, 141.

Sieg's strong finish has Marquette two shots off the pace for the team lead. Akron leads the way at even par, 576. Marquette is at two-over, 578. The two teams are running away with the event as MU has an eight shot lead over third place USF, who is at 10-over, 586. Marquette is the defending champion of the BIG EAST/MAC Challenge.

One other Marquette golfer is in the top 10. Sophomore Mike Van Sickle is in ninth place at one-over, 145. He had 10 birdies through 36 holes, the second best total behind 11 by DePaul's Greg Doherty, who is in a tie for third with Akron's Blake Sattler and Ohio's Grant Christman at two-under 142. Villanova's Steve Arnold and Akron's Brad Wright are in sixth at one-under, 143. St. John's George Zolotas is in eight at even par, 144. Joining Van Sickle in ninth at one-over, 145, is Justin Fetcho of USF, L.J. Tosches of Connecticut and USF's Kevin Tilbury.

Rounding out the team scoring for Marquette is junior Ted Gray, who is in 15th place at three-over 147. Junior Michael Bielawski is in 20th at four-over 148. Freshman Dustin Schwab is in 24th at five-over, 149.

Competing as individuals, freshman Mike McDonald joins Schwab in 24th place at five-over, 149. Sophomore Chris Streff, playing in his first tournament this season is in 44th place at nine-over, 153.

 

 

Play resumes on Sunday, November 5 with teams teeing off at 7 a.m.
