Golfers Rally To Top-Three Finish
Nov. 4, 2014
Along with a combined 23 final-round birdies from the team, freshman Trevor Thomas and junior Pat Sanchez led the charge at Turtle Point Golf Course. Both MU golfers closed with a 2-under-par 70. Thomas tied for 15Th place individually, the rookie's best finish in four collegiate events thus far.
"We were able to take advantage of perfect conditions and got off to a hot start," said Bailey, whose squad was 10-under through the first eight holes of round three. "A few loose shots produced some big numbers midway through the round, but the boys bounced back and finished strong. We picked up some big wins this week. It was a nice way to finish a successful fall season."
Thomas was followed by the tournament's defending medalist and MU teammate Nick Nelson (T19). Sanchez rebounded from a first-round 81 to shoot 71 during second-round action Monday. He finished tied for 23rd place. CJ Swift (T29) matched his opening-round score of 73 Tuesday to finish one stroke back.
The Golden Eagles' composite team score of 878 matched Missouri's three-day total. The Tigers were four strokes off the lead entering Tuesday's final round. Winthrop (864) hung on to capture the team title led by individual medalist Zach Seabolt (69-72-71) followed by runner-up Georgia Southern (868).
Marquette will spend some time in Central Florida at the end of February and again in early March practicing and playing exhibition events prior to the team's first scheduled competition of the spring which is set for April 10-12 at the El Macero Classic at El Macero Country Club in El Macero, Calif.
